Message from the President

Susan G. Komen for the Cure South Dakota Affiliate was established in April 2005. As the Premier Breast Cancer Foundation for our entire state, the Board of Directors has worked diligently to spread our mission throughout the many vast miles. We are very proud that we have granted nearly $500,000 to many SD organizations to help women and their families with breast health services and projects.
The inaugural South Dakota Komen Race for the Cure was held on September 28, 2008. More than 2,000 participated in the world renowned 5K run/fitness walk that took participants through the serene streets of Vermillion and celebrated the finish inside the University of South Dakota’s Dakota Dome. We honored Breast Cancer Survivors and empowered all women to “take charge” of their own good health by learning all they can about breast cancer and getting early screenings. We were all focused and dedicated to the KOMEN MISSION “a world without breast cancer.
Up to 75 percent of the net proceeds from the Race remain in South Dakota to fund our grant program and the remainder of the net proceeds—a minimum of 25 percent—will support the Susan G. Komen for the Cure National Research Program which funds groundbreaking breast cancer research.
We appreciate all the support we have been given by the wonderful people of South Dakota to make Komen South Dakota successful. A special thanks to our talented Board of Directors and committee members who put in countless volunteer hours to spread our mission. Rest assured, we are making a difference and we will enjoy the fruits of our labor to celebrate a “world without breast cancer”.
Last, but very important, please save the date for this year’s Race for the Cure® on September 27, 2009 in Vermillion, SD.
