Message from the President
Susan
G Komen for the Cure South Dakota Affiliate was
established in April 2005. It has been exciting times as
the Board of Directors have worked hard to engage the
entire state. Vast distances and a small population pose
its challenges and rewards. In just a few short years
and with support from friends of the South Dakota
Affiliate we have granted more than $250,000 across the
state for breast cancer projects.

Today we are planning the
inaugural Komen South Dakota Race for the Cure. The
world renowned race is scheduled for September 28,
2008. Many volunteers are actively organizing the event
with Collette Abbott as Race Chair.
The 5K run/fitness walk will take participants through
the streets of Vermillion before finishing inside The
University of South Dakota’s Dakota Dome with an awards
and tribute ceremony honoring Race winners and breast
cancer survivors.
The Race raises funds to the benefit of breast cancer
survivors throughout our state. It provides a day of
celebration in honor of our Survivors and loved ones who
have provided inspiration in their battle against this
disease. By running, walking or volunteering, we can all
work toward the same goal – a world without breast
cancer. Up to 75 percent of net proceeds from
the Race will remain in South Dakota to fund breast
health community outreach programs. The remainder of the
net proceeds – a minimum of 25 percent – will support
the Susan G. Koman for the Cure Award and Research Grant
Program which funds groundbreaking breast cancer
research.
Thank you to all who have made Komen South Dakota
successful. A special thanks to the Board of Directors
who so willingly volunteer their time. Our success is
only because of you...the Board, friends, volunteers and
many faces that look forward to a world without breast
cancer.
Sincerely,
Connie J Wagner
